Me Not","regular-body":"<h2>Slider Definition<\/h2>\n<p>Content sliders, also called carousels, sliders, image rotators, featured content modules etc. began to explode in usage on websites around the same time that the JavaScript framework jQuery surged in popularity (around 2008) though the concept had been around a lot longer. They probably emerged for a number of reasons but the liberal use of Flash in web page headers, irrational belief that the \u201cpage fold\u201d was actually an issue, and the popular cover-flow design pattern that was first seen in iTunes 7 are all likely big contributors.<\/p>\n<p>With the simplification of JavaScript animation thanks in large part to jQuery, it was easier than ever to rotate elements like a side show. This was very \u201cWeb 2.0\u201d and allowed a designer to pack a lot more content into a single space on a web page. Free from the constraints of Flash, sliders could contain any sort of HTML including rich text, images, videos, and forms.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, the content slider is so pervasive that it can be found on just about any kind of website yet despite the ubiquity of the slider, how effective are they and are they even a good idea in the first place?<\/p>\n<h2>Research<\/h2>\n<p>When we take a look at what the web design industry has to say, we see a number valid points raised along with some relevant data to provide objectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Erik Runyon <a href=\"http:\/\/erikrunyon.com\/2013\/01\/carousel-stats\/\">published data from a study he did<\/a> in 2013 on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.edu\/\">University of Notre Dame website<\/a>. Looking at 3.7 million visits to the ND home page, only about 1% clicked on a feature article in the carousel and of that 1% nine out of ten clicked on the item in the first position (there were 5 slider items).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/yorkwebteam.blogspot.co.uk\/2013\/03\/are-homepage-carousels-effective-aka.html\">study on the University of York<\/a> around the same time period saw similar results in carousel item engagement with a big drop off after the second item.<\/p><p>Looking at the analytics of a couple websites we manage we continued to see similar patterns. For one client in particular we observed the following:<\/p><ul><li>From February 18 2015 through March 18<sup>th<\/sup> 2015, the home page receive almost 12,000 clicks.<br\/><\/li><li>The slider on this page had 4 items<br\/><\/li><li>The first item in the sliders received 1% of all the clicks during this time (around 120)<br\/><\/li><li>Sliders items two, three, and four received 0.3% (40 clicks), 0.5% (60 clicks), and 0.5% (60 click) respectively<br\/><\/li><\/ul><h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<p>As a driver of engagement and conversion, content sliders are simply just not very effective.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Takeaways<\/h2>\n\n<p>So are we to conclude that content sliders are bad and should never be used? Of course not. To help us understand what drives their usage and hurts their effectiveness we must consider why. It is hard for most individuals to quickly prioritize a list of items of various importance and even harder for teams of people to do so. Items that may be important often vary in importance depending on who the visitor is, whether they are new or returning, the season or circumstance of the organization and a variety of other reasons. Sliders allow us to avoid making these choices about prioritization and importance by tucking things into what seems like an innocuous, tidy package.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Pitfalls<\/h2>\n<h3>Banner Blindness<\/h3>\n<p>The pervasiveness of sliders and the transient nature of content in them invoke the same response in people that display ads do. The irony being that while some of the most important things are placed in a slider, this tendency makes them less likely to be noticed by the visitors for which they are targeted.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Poor Usability<\/h3>\n<p>The Nielsen Norman group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/auto-forwarding\/\">conducted a study<\/a> that showed that auto-rotating or transitioning sliders killed conversion, stymied usability, and caused information retention to plummet. Further, rotating navigation is often much poorer on mobile.<\/p>\n\n<h3>The Paradox of Choice<\/h3>\n<p>It might seem counter intuitive but the more choices you give a user the less likely they are to make a choice at all. This is known as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Paradox_of_Choice\">the paradox of choice<\/a> and has been documented with some regularity in user testing and focus groups. The data for sliders also supports this as evidenced by the linear drop off of clicks beyond the first element in most sliders.<\/p>\n\n<h3>The Lost <strike>Continent<\/strike> Content<\/h3>\n<p>Most carousels do a very poor job of showing what is next or what is previous to the current item. This leads to \u201cpogo-sticking,\u201d inaction, and a higher bounce rate.<\/p>\n<h3>Page Weight<\/h3>\n<p>A slider or carousel is deceptive in that it\u2019s footprint is relatively small, and yet every item it has adds an incremental tax to the load time. With page speed being such an important element to everything from usability, customer satisfaction, conversion, SEO, and mobile, the impact a slider has on performance is extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>So before you decide to use a slider make sure that:<\/p>\n<ul><li>You really need it (and if so, do you really need it on the home page)<\/li>\n<li>You have a small number of items in your carousel (2 to 3 at the most)<\/li>\n<li>You keep the slider items simple \u2013 white space improves reading comprehension and conversion<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t auto rotate (or at least give ample time, &gt;15 seconds, between rotations)<\/li>\n<li>You include a way to preview or provide hints to next and previous items<\/li>\n<li>You optimize slider content to load fast with optimized images and concise messaging and by lazy loading items after the first element if possible<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>On a lighter note, I enjoyed <a href=\"http:\/\/shouldiuseacarousel.com\/\">this website\u2019s commentary<\/a> on the subject as well as Brad Frost\u2019s take:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>INT. I love this place, not for any particular reason. I have never had a big night out here or watched a championship game here. I just love the old building, how it seems like it took over a residence and has so many nooks and crannies. It is always dimly lighted in the bar. I have struck up conversations with complete strangers here, like the guy who went to Texas A&amp;M lamenting his team&rsquo;s departure from the Big 12 or this old timer who told me about how he had lived in Avon his whole life and how much he wanted the best for his son.<\/p><p>Just now I was reading my go-to sports journalism column, Grantland. A fascinating\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/it-factor-nfl-quarterback-intangibles\/\">article on the It Factor in the NFL<\/a>. I have had such great moments of solitude having a beer, waiting for my spicy barbecue wings, (too often to the consternation of my incredibly patient wife) and just lost in an article about <a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/dear-coach-tressel\/\">Jim Tressel<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/the-movie-star\/\">Will Smith<\/a> or an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/hollywood-prospectus\/battle-for-the-best-song-of-the-millennium-this-is-the-end\/\">NCAA bracket of popular music<\/a>. I couldn&rsquo;t capture a feeling of just being quite like this anywhere else.<\/p><p>This is not to discount the many amazing and wonderful things in my life from my family and career achievements to world travel and big parties with friends at the bay. It is just it&rsquo;s own thing, not valued for specifics, just the intangibles.<\/p><p>To paint the picture, a guy to my left walks in wafting cigarette smoke, and Skid Row&rsquo;s I Remember You plays over the speakers. A miniature replica of the famous leg lamp from A Cristmas Story illuminates the beverage coasters and martini straws next to a wooden bowl for wing bones and my paper placemat of featured brews. The Tribe just went up on the Royals (yawn, I mean yay!) and Hank from my DJ days at Dailey&rsquo;s just walked by. The guy next to me laments about the Browns while his neighbor comments on the possibility of them picking up Mike Sam who was cut by the Rams. Kids, out past their bed times, pester their parents, while bar backs stock the outside and the crowd changes over from diners to drinkers.<\/p><p>In a few months, the new Winking Lizard will open near Avon Commons. It&rsquo;ll be new and centrally located. It will also be down the street from the new Bar 145. And while I am sure to love the brand new high def screen and optimized layout, the clean walls and ample parking, as I turn back to my article on the It Factor, I realize that this is what this Winking Lizard has. The question is whether it will keep it with the move or end up like another BW3, soulless and commoditized with nothing distinguishing, nothing unique.\n\n<br\/><\/p>","tags":["commentary
